2 May (NucNet): Jordan has completed its evaluation of possible technology options for its first nuclear reactor unit and says it will “continue discussions” with Atomstroyexport of Russia and Atmea, an Areva-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries joint venture.
In a statement yesterday the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) said the two best-qualified reactor types are Atomstroyexport’s AES-92 VVER-1000 and the 1,100 megawatt Atmea-1. The commission said both meet the requirements set out in its invitation to bid.
The decision comes after a two-year review conducted by JAEC, which included a third technology, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd’s Candu reactor design.
JAEC said it will now negotiate with the two suppliers to resolve “certain outstanding technical issues” including the completion of the site selection process.
This final phase of the technology selection process will be performed in close coordination with a nuclear operating company that is expected to be established, JAEC said.
