27 Sept (NucNet): Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria has significant experience in the long-term storage of spent fuel, which is important for the International Atomic Energy Agency and should be disseminated to other member countries, the agency’s deputy director-general Alexander Bychkov said.
During a visit to the plant this week Mr Bychkov said Bulgaria is one of the most active participants in IAEA activities with many experts taking part in numerous agency projects.
He was told about modernisation plans for Kozloduy and the project for additional capacity in the form of a seventh nuclear unit on the site.
Kozloduy-5 and -6 are Bulgaria’s only two commercially operational nuclear units. They are VVER V-320 reactors with a net electrical output of 953 megawatts each.
In 1999, the Bulgarian government closed down Kozloduy’s four VVER V-230 units to comply with a condition for entry into the EU. Units 1 and 2 were shut down in 2002 and units 3 and 4 in 2006.
