15 Nov (NucNet): The French government will not shut down any nuclear reactors after the two-unit Fessenheim plant shuts down in 2016, Arnaud Montebourg, minister for industry, said in an interview with Bloomberg.

Mr Montebourg said the decision will keep all remaining reactors open. He said: “Nuclear offers a competitive advantage for the performance of France’s industrial base. Our nuclear investment allows us to have competitive energy costs, less than elsewhere.”

Mr Montebourg’s comments are in contrast to president Francois Hollande’s election campaign promise to reduce the nuclear share of electricity generation in France from around 75 percent today to 50 percent.
