Regulator Approves Restart Of South Korean Reactors

3 Jan (NucNet): Approval has been given for the restart of three South Korean nuclear reactors that have been offline since May 2013 because documentation related to safety-related control cabling was falsified, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) said.

Two of the country’s nuclear reactor units – Shin-Kori-2 and Shin-Wolsong-1 – were ordered offline in May 2013 for the replacement of safety-related cabling, installed as a result of falsified environmental qualification test reports.

The scheduled maintenance period of a further unit, Shin-Kori-1, was extended for cabling to be replaced.

The NSSC also said cabling must be replaced at the new Shin-Wolsong-2, which is under construction, before an operating licence can be issued.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, South Korea has 23 reactors in commercial operation and five under construction.
