10 Jan (NucNet): Japan’s federal draft budget for the forthcoming fiscal year includes 652 billion yen (about 6.2 billion US dollars, 4.5 billion euros) for expenditure related to the decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant and the rehabilitation of surrounding areas.
According to the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (Jaif), the draft budget for fiscal year 2014-2015 includes USD 3.7 billion for decontamination, including the disposal of radioactively contaminated waste. It includes USD 963 million for building an interim waste storage facility and USD 1.1 billion for measures to support evacuees, including grants to accelerate reconstruction efforts in Fukushima prefecture.
Jaif said the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has also asked for around USD 548 million for reconstruction in Fukushima prefecture and USD 179 million for the development of safety infrastructure related to nuclear power.
