9 Jul (NucNet): Amec Nuclear UK has been chosen as technical adviser to provide support for the programme to build Poland’s first nuclear power plant, PGE EJ1, a subsidiary of Polish state-owned energy group Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), said in a statement.
According to PGE EJ1, the contract is worth approximately 430 million US dollars (315 million euros).
Amec’s role will be to support PGE EJ1, which was established to build and operate the proposed plant, during the development and execution of the project.
Amec will support PGE EJ1 in “meeting the requirements” of the reactor vendor, who has not yet been chosen, the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor, and other key service providers, the statement said.
The scope of the work will cover 13 areas of cooperation including licensing, safety culture, supply chain oversight, quality assurance, start-up and testing, the statement said.
PGE said in May 2014 that construction of the first reactor unit in Poland will begin “around 2020”.
PGE said it plans to make a definitive decision on construction in early 2017 after it has developed a business and investment model which will ensure the profitability of the project.
Earlier this year Poland’s government adopted a programme which will see the first nuclear unit completed and producing electricity by the end of 2024.
The government said in a statement that a second reactor is scheduled to begin commercial operation by the end of 2035.
The schedule says a site selection procedure and tender process should be concluded by the end of 2016 and the licensing process should be completed by the end of 2018.
